Project Description

Betsy Soifer

Nature fascinates me. My recycled mixed metal sculpture whimsically mimics animals. Recycling to reduce waste, I build my sculptures using nuts, bolts, and screws to combine parts selected for their color and shape. The metal pieces usually maintain their initial identity. Viewers at my booths are often trying to identify these parts. Insects often have recycled glass abdomens or ceramic electric insulator bodies and are designed to either sit atop a garden stake or to fly from a hook. Taxidermy was everywhere in Eastern Pennsylvania growing up. In honor of the tradition, my animal heads and mounted birds are designed for wall mounting. Driftwood from the Oregon coast is employed as a base for fish and birds. My free-standing pieces are often life-size. Most are ready for a life outside.
