Cathie Joy Young

The act of painting inspires me to paint. I work in acrylic on cradled wood panels. My work is figurative within an abstracted space. I rely heavily on color, structure, and negative space. These relationships inform my decisions along the way. Through the process, I get to the imagery. I hold true to the formal aspects of composition and develop a visual logic within each piece, eventually revealing a loose narrative, like borrowed memories remembered. The theme of my recent work is patterning and connectivity. I work with tiny shapes and line, forming intricate patterns reminiscent of circuitry, cells, and other tiny things. My content evolves along with the patterns, and usually involves reconciling whatever my mind is currently wrestling with, as well as my fascination with history.
